W2 Professorship for Urban Design and Design Methodology

Your responsibilities

Cities and urban societies are facing great challenges and potential: the effects of climate change on the future viability of the built environment, the profound societal changes with regard to new economies, ways of living and life models, advancing digitalization as well as the increasing need for participation pose enormous questions and challenges for traditional planning processes and procedures, right down to the morphological expression of neighbourhoods and cities.


These diverse aspects, which interweave in many areas, form the basis of research, teaching and discourse in the context of urban design and design methodology and thus the scientific discussion for this chair.


The purpose of this chair is to teach designing on an urban scale within the context of functional, social and spatial aspects. In order to convey in relation to a broader architectural education, the position should be filled by a personality who has dealt with a theoretical and practical exploration of urban design methods and also has high level of experience in sustainable urban design and urban development.


The ability to convey one's own design work and one's own research in teaching, as well as to convey current and relevant theories and works in urban design and planning through lectures and seminars is mandatory.

Our expectations

The professorship for urban design and design methodology is centrally anchored in both the fundamental teaching in the bachelor's and master's programs of architecture at the TU Braunschweig. It is expected that this person will be able to teach the basics of urban design as an essential subject of architecture. The candidate will teach innovative methods of urban design through lectures, exercises, seminars and supervises urban design projects, from a low complexity through to complex urban design tasks by also providing insights into their own methodical approach to designing. It is further expected that the candidate brings excellent specialist knowledge of structural-spatial as well as socio-cultural aspects of our built cities into the discourse of teaching.


  • The ability to convey one's own design work and one's own research in teaching, as well as to convey current and relevant theories and works in urban design and planning through lectures and seminars is mandatory.
  • Cooperation in the application for external, third-party funding
  • Evidence of personal authorship in design and research
  • Teaching experience, e.g. through teaching positions, guest reviews and specialist lectures
  • Leadership skills demonstrated through leading management function with personnel responsibility
  • Proof of interdisciplinary cooperation based on projects in practice and/or research 
  • Participation in the self-administration of the university and the department


Good working knowledge of the English language is expected, as is a high willingness to hold courses in English.


As part of the further development of the teaching and research formats, an increasing interdisciplinarity is desirable both within the university as part of the joint research focus "City of the Future" and beyond.


The willingness to participate in the internationalization of the university is expected.


Individual career decisions and career breaks due to parental/family care leave affecting research output will be taken into account by the appointment committee.

  • A degree in a relevant field
  • Pedagogical aptitude
  • Special qualification for in-depth independent scientific work, as a rule proven by an above-average doctorate
  • Additional academic achievements, usually within the framework of a junior professorship, a post-doctoral degree (Habilitation) or through achievements equivalent to a Habilitation
