The 3,800 members of our academic, technical and administrative staff – including more than 400 international scientific staff – work together to ensure that our university successfully fulfils its mission of providing excellent teaching for our approximately 16,000 students and 100 trainees.

We focus our research on mobility, metrology, engineering for health, and the future city. Our core disciplines include a comprehensive engineering division and a strong natural sciences division, closely linked with business sciences, social sciences, educational sciences, and the humanities.

Our university is located at the heart of one of Europe’s most research-intensive regions.  We cooperate closely with the more than 20 internationally renowned research institutions in our vicinity and our network extends to our partner universities in Germany and all over the world, with whom we maintain strong relationships.

Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences

We offer a

W3 Professorship for Railway Systems Engineering - Construction of Railway Systems

The appointment is for the earliest possible date.

Your responsibilities

The candidate(s) should represent the research field of railway engineering in the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences in an internationally visible manner.

Professorships in railway engineering are a cornerstone of civil engineering and transport engineering at TU Braunschweig. A sustainable railway system is one of the essential foundations of the common good. The infrastructure of the railway system and other track-based transport facilities are an integral and important part of the transport system. The long-term strategic development of an efficient, environmentally friendly and sustainable transport system and the sustainable construction of transport facilities are core tasks of civil and transport engineering.

Possible research areas include

  • the optimisation of track technology, such as the development of high-performance, climate and environmentally friendly construction and maintenance methods using resilient, durable superstructure structures and recyclable building materials,
  • the optimisation of the construction process and structural maintenance under the aspect of a life cycle-oriented maintenance concept
  • the digitalisation of design, construction and structural maintenance, construction and maintenance requirements for railway operations, including in the context of implementation strategies under the ‘rolling wheel’ and the closure of lines,
  • railway operational requirements for construction and maintenance, the development of innovative maintenance concepts to uphold and guarantee the timetable,
  • procedures for optimising operational processes with particular consideration of the robustness of the overall system, especially during construction and maintenance measures
  • Digitalisation of construction and operations management performance

The successful candidate(s) (f/m/d) are expected to be committed to the university’s strategic goals and to actively shape its holistic development (https://www.tu-braunschweig.de/hochschulentwicklung). In addition to the classic service areas of a university (research, teaching and studies, transfer, governance and administration), this applies in particular to digitalisation, internationalisation, equality and diversity, as well as knowledge exchange.

Our expectations

The professorship(s) are associated with the professional representation of the field of railway engineering in the faculty. In teaching, the core subjects in railway engineering must be represented in its full breadth in the basic subjects of the Bachelor's programme (in German). In the Master's degree programme in Transport and Civil Engineering, courses in selected areas of railway engineering should be taught in German and/or English. In addition, the professorship is represented with courses in the Environmental Engineering degree programme. Active participation in shaping the research programmes ‘Mobility’ and ‘City of the Future’ is desired.

  • The successful candidate(s) will have a proven track record in science and practice and several years of professional experience. Academic excellence should be demonstrated through publication activity in international, peer-reviewed journals and through successful acquisition of third-party funding. Experience in applying for and working on projects from scientifically demanding third-party funding organisations is desirable
  • International networking
  • Practical experience in the field of railways can be demonstrated by taking on advisory, planning or management functions in projects as well as participation in standardisation or expert committees
  • Didactic aptitude, language skills for teaching in German and English
  • Experience in interdisciplinary cooperation
  • Willingness to actively participate in faculty matters and committees
  • Ability to work in a team and social skills

Requirements, § 25 NHG

  • A degree in a relevant field
  • Pedagogical aptitude
  • Special qualification for in-depth independent scientific work, as a rule proven by an above-average doctorate
  • Additional academic achievements, usually within the framework of a junior professorship, a post-doctoral degree (Habilitation) or through achievements equivalent to a Habilitation
