Technische Universität Braunschweig is one of Germany’s leading institutes of technology and offers an inspiring work environment with a wide range of research and teaching opportunities in state-of-the-art facilities. The 3,800 members of our academic, technical and administrative staff – including more than 400 international scientific staff – work together to ensure that our university successfully fulfils its mission of providing excellent teaching for our approximately 16,000 students and 100 trainees.

We focus our research on mobility, metrology, engineering for health, and the future city. Our core disciplines include a comprehensive engineering division and a strong natural sciences division, closely linked with business sciences, social sciences, educational sciences, and the humanities.

Our university is located at the heart of one of Europe’s most research-intensive regions.  We cooperate closely with the more than 20 internationally renowned research institutions in our vicinity and our network extends to our partner universities in Germany and all over the world, with whom we maintain strong relationships.

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

We offer a

W3_Professorship for Production Metrology

The appointment is planned for 01.01.2026

Your responsibilities

The professorship will represent the field of Production Metrology at the TU Braunschweig as well as in cooperation with the surrounding research centers and non-university institutions. Next to the core research area of mobility, the key research contents should strategically strengthen the field of metrology. Rounding off the primary focus on measurement techniques and methods, a strong connection to manufacturing and process technologies (e.g. machining, casting, joining etc.) is envisioned. Methodological orientations can be, for example, current approaches for measurement technologies in the closed-loop production of energy storage systems or for process chains for the production of complex products (e.g. batteries, fuel cells, automotive components). Due to the key relevance of the research topics, the professorship will be incorporated into several application-oriented research centres of the TU Braunschweig. Especially a significant integration into the activities of the Open Hybrid LabFactory (OHLF) as well as the Battery LabFactory Braunschweig (BLB) is intended. Additional participation within the Laboratory for Emerging Nanometrology (LENA), the Aeronautics Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFL), the Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFF) and the Center of Pharmaceutical Engineering (PVZ) is welcomed. In addition, TU Braunschweig aims to strengthen its long-term cooperation with the national metrology institute (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt PTB). A very close thematic and strategically orientated connection with the PTB is therefore planned.

Possible research areas include:

  • Development and expansion/optimization of techniques and methods for the condition and quality analysis of materials, components and products
  • Techniques and methods for tracking and tracing materials and components/products in closed-loop production
  • Integration of sensors and systems for in-situ/online monitoring in production processes and process chains
  • Research and further development of possible applications for soft sensor technology and AI-supported sensor technology
  • Systemic consideration of measurement and sensor technologies
  • Evaluation of measurement and sensor technologies with respect to sustainability aspects

In teaching, production metrology is relevant as a cross-sectional discipline in various degree programmes at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and beyond. The professorship will therefore offer courses in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, especially for mechanical and industrial engineering, metrology and measurement technology, pharmaceutical process engineering as well as sustainable engineering of products and processes.

The successful candidate (f/m/d) is expected to be committed to the university’s strategic goals and to actively shape its holistic development (https://www.tu-braunschweig.de/hochschulentwicklung). In addition to the classic service areas of a university (research, teaching and studies, transfer, governance and administration), this applies in particular to digitalisation, internationalisation, equality and diversity, as well as knowledge exchange.

Our expectations

  • Proven expertise in the field of production metrology
  • Relevant publications at high and highest international levels
  • Proven experience in academic teaching, preferably in both German and English
  • In-depth knowledge of measurement technology, the associated measurement methods and relevant production processes
  • Experience and success in acquiring third-party funding (fundamental and application-oriented research with an industrial focus)
  • Experience in positions with personnel or technical management responsibility as well as in the management of larger projects
  • Willingness to cooperate in interdisciplinary and application-oriented networks and environments
  • Active participation in academic self-administration
  • Ability to work in a team and social competence

International research and teaching experience, excellent command of the English language, as well as the ability and willingness to teach courses in English are a prerequisite.

Individual career decisions and career breaks due to parental/family care leave affecting research output will be taken into account by the appointment committee.

Requirements, § 25 NHG

  • A degree in a relevant field
  • Pedagogical aptitude
  • Special qualification for in-depth independent scientific work, as a rule proven by an above-average doctorate
  • Additional academic achievements, usually within the framework of a junior professorship, a post-doctoral degree (Habilitation) or through achievements equivalent to a Habilitation

Notes

TU Braunschweig makes personnel decisions on the basis auf suitability, ability and professional performance.

Our aim is to increase the share of women in academic positions. Therefore, we particularly welcome applications from women and will give preference to female candidates with equivalent qualifications. People with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply and, if equally qualified, will be given preference in the appointment process.

TU Braunschweig is certified as a family-friendly university. We are committed to facilitating a healthy and productive work-life balance and offer a dual career service as well as support for newly appointed staff. Our Family Office provides advice on all issues relating to family, childcare, and caring for relatives. Our “Prof.-Programm” offers exclusive status-related exchange and consulting formats, in particular to newly appointed professors.

The university actively endorses equal opportunities and diversity and promotes diverse perspectives as essential in contributing to the university’s success in research, teaching, transfer and ad-ministration.

We particularly invite applications from international candidates (f/m/d). German language skills are not a prerequisite. However, the successful candidate is expected to acquire sufficient language skills to perform teaching and administrative duties in German within a year of appointment.

Even though this is a permanent full-time position, a part-time appointment may be possible upon request.

Applicants (f/m/d) who are 50 years or older at the time the appointment commences and who have not acquired permanent civil servant status (Beamtenverhältnis auf Lebenszeit) will be em-ployed with employee status (Angestelltenverhältnis).

We are looking forward to your application!
